Special Public Meeting of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Board of Regents Scheduled for Dec. 22; Action to be Taken on Memoranda of Understanding for UMBI Restructuring

Adelphi, Md. (Dec. 18, 2009) - A special public meeting of the University System of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø) Board of Regents is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday, December 22. The meeting will be held in the Chancellor's Conference Room in the Elkins Building at the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø headquarters, 3300 Metzerott Road, Adelphi, MD.

Action items before the board include:

• A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø; the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, Baltimore (UMB); the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, Baltimore County (UMBC); and the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) to restructure the  University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Biotechnology Institute's (UMBI) Center of Marine Biotechnology as the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology.

• An MOU between ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø and UMBC to address the assignment of UMBI's Institute of Fluorescence to UMBC.

The Board of Regents on June 19, 2009 voted to realign UMBI's centers with other ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø institutions to increase multidisciplinary and collaborative research. Once the realignment is complete, UMBI will no longer exist as a separate ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø institution.
 
The board will also hear discussion regarding an admissions and amusement tax derived from ticket admissions to intercollegiate athletic events. The University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, College Park (UMCP) has sought the guidance of the board on this matter.

After the public meeting, the regents will meet in executive session.
