ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Welcomes Three New Members to Board of Regents
Adelphi, Md. (June 29, 2009) – The ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø) welcomes three new members to the Board of
Regents. John Young, M.D., Linda Gooden and Sarah Elfreth were nominated to the
board by Governor Martin O’Malley and confirmed during the 2009 Legislative
Session by the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Senate.
Their terms will begin July 1,
2009. A swearing-in ceremony welcoming the new regents will be held at 12 noon
July 2 in the Governor’s Reception Room in the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø State House in
Annapolis.
Young and Gooden succeed Alicia
Coro Hoffman and Michael Gill, whose five-year terms ended this June. Elfreth,
a rising senior at Towson University, will serve a one-year term as student regent.
She succeeds Josh Michael, a University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, Baltimore County student
whose term also ends June 30.
John Young, M.D., is president of the
Montgomery County Medical Society and chair of the board of directors of the
Asian Pacific American (APA) Chamber of Commerce, Inc. He also serves as an APA
advisor to Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and is a member of the board
of visitors for the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø College of Chemical and Life
Sciences.
A state resident for more than 40
years, Young received his undergraduate degree from the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø,
College Park and earned his M.D. from the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø School of
Medicine. He completed his medical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Linda Gooden is a vice president
with Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services and an Officer
of the Lockheed Martin Corporation. A champion for education in the STEM
(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines, she has served
on executive boards at numerous ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø institutions, including the University of
ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, Baltimore County and the University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø’s A. James Clark
School of Engineering.
Gooden has been honored with
membership in the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Business Hall of Fame and selection as U.S. Black Engineer and IT Black
Engineer of the Year. The University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø University College awarded her
an honorary doctor of public service degree in recognition for her service to
the community and higher education.
Sarah Elfreth is a rising senior at
Towson University, pursuing bachelor’s degrees in political science and
economics. During the 2007-08 academic year, she served as Towson’s student
representative and the director of government relations on the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Student
Council. She has served as a resident assistant and member of the university’s
Student Government Association. She was an intern for ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Senator Jim
Rosapepe during summer 2008. Elfreth plans to pursue graduate studies in public
policy before embarking on a teaching career.
A 17-member Board of Regents, including one
full-time student, governs the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø. Appointed by the
governor, the regents oversee the system's academic, administrative, and
financial operations; formulate policy; and appoint the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø chancellor and the
presidents of the system's 13 institutions. With the exception of the student
member, each regent is appointed for a term of five years and may not serve
more than two consecutive terms. The student regent is appointed for a one-year
term and may be reappointed. Regents serve on the board without compensation.
The ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø comprises
11 universities, two research institutions, two regional higher education
centers and a system office. ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø provides access to excellent higher education
opportunities, performs groundbreaking research, offers vital services to
communities and individuals and fuels economic and workforce development.
