ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Welcomes Three New Members to the Board of Regents

ADELPHI, Md. (April 4, 2008) - The ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø) welcomes three new members to the Board of Regents. Norman R. Augustine, Dr. Frank M. Reid III, and Joshua L. Michael were nominated to the board by Governor Martin O'Malley and confirmed in March by the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Senate. Their terms will begin July 1, 2008. Augustine and Reid replace Robert Mitchell and Robert Pevenstein, whose five-year terms conclude this June. Michael, a sophomore at University of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, Baltimore County (UMBC), will serve a one-year term as Student Regent.

"I am honored to welcome our new board members and look forward to working with them in the coming years," said Clifford M. Kendall, board chair. "Each brings a wealth of experience and perspective that will be invaluable to the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø."

Norman Augustine, former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, previously served as chairman and principal officer of the American Red Cross for nine years. A recipient of the President's National Medal of Technology and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award, Augustine has a long and distinguished career in the defense industry as well as in public service as an Assistant Secretary of the Army, Under Secretary of the Army, and later Acting Secretary of the Army. In addition to numerous corporate and non-profit board memberships, he has served as a trustee of Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives in Montgomery County.


Dr. Frank M. Reid III

Dr. Frank M. Reid III has served as senior pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Baltimore City for the past 20 years. A highly regardedspeaker, author, and teacher, Reid is a graduate of Harvard and Yale universities and received his doctorate in ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. His ministry has taken him to South Korea, Liberia, and England, and he served A.M.E. congregations in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Los Angeles before coming to Baltimore. Under Reid's leadership, Bethel A.M.E. Church has grown in membership and become the first A.M.E. church to have a weekly international television broadcast. He lives in Baltimore County.

Joshua L. Michael is a rising junior at UMBC studying political science and secondary education. He has served as the UMBC representative to the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Student Council since 2006 and is currently a student commissioner on the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Higher Education Commission. From 2005 to 2006, he was a student member of the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø State Board of Education. Michael has also spent two summers as an intern in the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø State Department of Education's Office of Academic Policy. He is from Howard County.

As ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's governing body, the Board of Regents is responsible for the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations. In addition, the board formulates policy and appoints the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø chancellor and the presidents of the system's 13 institutions.
