Students, Presidents Rally in Support of Governor's Higher Education Plan
ANNAPOLIS,
Md. (November 1, 2007) - The higher education community of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø
rallied on Lawyers Mall in Annapolis Wednesday, October 31, to
express its support for Governor Martin O'Malley's proposed dedicated
revenue enhancements for higher education.
"This is a bold vision for our future," said ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø) Chancellor William E. Kirwan. "They don't
just want to pay the bills and balance the budget; they want to invest
in our future, in health care and in higher education."
Students and presidents from ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's public and private colleges and
universities echoed the chancellor's call to support the Governor and
the Legislature in closing the state's budget deficit
while making investment in higher education a priority for ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø.
In
addition to Governor O'Malley and Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown,
the following officials also joined the rally: James E. Lyons, ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø
Secretary of Higher Education, ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø
Higher Education Commission; Earl
Richardson, President of Morgan State University; Tina Bjarekull,
President,
and Bret Schreiber, Vice President, of the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Independent
Colleges and
Universities Association (MICUA); MICUA board chair Sanford Ungar,
President of
Goucher College, and Chris Nelson, President of St. John's College; and
representatives of St. Mary's College of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø and the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø
Association
of Community Colleges.
