ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Chancellor Jay A. Perman and Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden on the Death of Former ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Regent James T. Brady

Baltimore, Md. (Sept. 10, 2021)On behalf of the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø) and our Board of Regents, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of James T. Brady. While Jim was born and educated in New York, he was a ϡȱÁÔÆæÍøer through-and-through. And in everything he dedicated himself to—a successful career in the private sector, years of government service (supporting both Democratic and Republican administrations), volunteering with community organizations—Jim Brady always gave his very best to the people and the state of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø.

Jim’s service to the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø was extensive. In the mid-1990s, he served as chair of UMBC’s Board of Visitors. And from 2015 to 2018, he was a member of the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Board of Regents—for a year leading the Committee on Education Policy & Student Life before being named Board chair.

Jim welcomed four ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø university presidents during the time he headed the Board. A dedicated champion of accountability and fiscal responsibility, he launched the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Scorecard to provide at-a-glance data on strategic plan progress, and led the System as it won strong ratings from all three major bond ratings agencies. Jim was committed to keeping a ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø education affordable for all students in ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø, and tuition increases never exceeded 2 percent under his watch.

Jim also led the Board through the launch of the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø’s $10 million ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Momentum Fund, which provides investment in early-stage companies affiliated with the University System. To date, the fund has invested in 24 ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø startups, with significant support from external co-investors.

Jim was an exceptionally kind man, concerned not only with the success of the University System, but with the well-being of the many thousands of people who make it run. We will miss his intelligence, his insight, his leadership, and his humanity.
