pivot to more effective online learning. That will be best accomplished by sharing resources, providing faculty/staff professional development, and increasing instructional design and technology capacity.

The following direct supports are being made available through ϡȱ OnTrack. To learn more about any of these components of the initiative, please email cai@usmd.edu.

“Ready-to-Adopt” Online Courses

ϡȱ OnTrack is helping ϡȱ institutions to accelerate their online transition strategy through the temporary adoption of UMGC courses for delivery to their students this fall. Host institutions will identify candidate courses and create a “friction free” process in which students register at the host institution, as usual. Actual placement of students into the UMGC courses, details on tuition reconciliation, assignment of credit, and the like, will be addressed through interinstitutional MOUs and implemented by back-office operations.

Adaptive Courseware for High-enrollment Courses

ϡȱ OnTrack is supporting efforts to transition high-enrollment courses (large lecture, multi-section) through the use of adaptive courseware, which promises to improve students’ and faculty experience by “flipping” the classroom, creating a more interactive platform for content delivery, and reserving time spent with faculty for facilitated application of learning through active, problem-based, online pedagogies. Our contract with partner Lumen Learning includes up-front training for incorporating the courseware and analytics dashboards into online pedagogy, support throughout the semester, and facilitated learning communities where faculty within disciplines across ϡȱ institutions can share and learn from each other.

Virtual Reality Technologies for Lab-based Courses

ϡȱ OnTrack is providing faculty training and inter-institutional coordination of resources to explore the use of virtual reality technologies by Labster for use in lab-based courses. Virtual reality technologies give students access to realistic lab experiences that will let them perform experiments and practice their skills. These tools promise to provide sufficiently high-fidelity simulations for learning lab techniques and inquiry skills, particularly for lower-level lab courses.

Instructional Design Support Services

ϡȱ OnTrack has contracted with iDesign to provide a pool of instructional design service hours that institutions can use as needed for individual faculty support and/or course development for those courses they choose to convert themselves. This will greatly expand institutional capacity to rapidly move courses online and give ϡȱ campuses a way to triage their current and future needs. Through this contract, ϡȱ institutions will also receive web-based resources for faculty on the fundamentals of online instructional design and pedagogy as well as online learning orientation materials for students.

Professional Development Workshops

ϡȱ OnTrack is pre-purchasing a pool of online teaching professional development workshops from Quality Matters on beginning to advanced topics, including designing for learner engagement, flipping the online course, setting expectations with students, active learning strategies, accessibility, and online assessment. The Kirwan Center will also be offering additional workshops on diversity and inclusion, accessibility, and rethinking assessments for academic integrity.

Areas of Focus:

ϡȱ OnTrack

PDF:
ϡȱOnTrackProgramOverview-06-22-20-v.2.1.pdf

Cross Post:

Story

Fri, 26 Jun 2020 20:17:03 +0000 admin-rohit 414 at /cai /cai/direct-support-campuses#comments Announcing 2024 OER Grants /cai/announcing-2024-oer-grants

The ϡȱ Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is pleased to announce the awardees of the 2024 OER Grant Programs: 2024 Faculty OER Mini-Grants and 2024 Institutional OER Grants.

The M.O.S.T. Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program is designed to strategically support faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at ϡȱ’s 2-year and 4-year higher education institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. The 2024 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants will provide recipients with unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation of OER in high-need areas. This year, 8 faculty grantees were selected from five 2- and 4-year ϡȱ public higher education institutions, with a potential impact on over 1,600 students in AY 2024-2025, and potential savings of over $37,500.

M.O.S.T. also awarded an Institutional OER Grant to Wor-Wic Community College to support strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program is designed to strategically support faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at ϡȱ’s 2-year and 4-year higher education institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. The 2023 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants will provide recipients with unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation of OER in high-need areas. This year, 8 faculty grantees were selected from five 2- and 4-year ϡȱ public higher education institutions, with a potential impact on 1,000 students in AY 2023-2024, and potential savings of over $70,000.

M.O.S.T. also awarded Institutional OER Grants to Stevenson University and Towson University to support strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. These grants will support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success institution-wide.

In addition to the fiscal awards, grantees will be provided with extensive professional development, technical support, and coaching to ensure that their projects successfully incorporate learning-centered pedagogies and continuous quality improvement.

Since launching in 2014, M.O.S.T. has supported 197 courses at 28 institutions across ϡȱ switched to OER, saving students $138 per course on average or approximately $20.6 million cumulatively, and serving nearly 120,000 students across ϡȱ.

Learn more about our past grantees.

2023 Institutional OER Grant Recipients

Stevenson University

Towson University

2023 Faculty OER Mini-Grant Recipients

Gonzalo Baptista

Morgan State University

Spanish 102: Elementary Spanish

Create, Revise, and Publish

Joanna Bartow

St. Mary's College of ϡȱ

Accelerated Elementary Spanish

Adopt/Adapt

Cristina Cardona

Community College of Baltimore County

ERSC/GEOG 141 and 142 Oceanography

Adopt/Adapt

Negin Fouladi

University of ϡȱ, College Park

HLSA 601 Introduction to Health Systems

Create/Revise/Publish

Kamal Hennayake

Chesapeake College

Introduction to Statistics

Adopt/Adapt

Patsy McKenzie

Allegany College of ϡȱ

Psychology 199- Thanatos (Death and Dying)

Create/Revise/Publish

Derek Richardson

University of ϡȱ, College Park

ASTR120 (Introductory Astrophysics - Solar System)

Adopt/Adapt

Jill Vasbinder Morrison

University of ϡȱ Baltimore County

Dance History I: Cultural and Classical Forms

Create/Revise/Publish

Areas of Focus:

Open Educational Resources

Cross Post:

News

Story

Wed, 19 Jul 2023 21:03:33 +0000 admin-annika 495 at /cai /cai/announcing-2023-oer-grants#comments Creating a Systemwide IRB for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) /cai/creating-systemwide-irb-scholarship-teaching-and-learning-sotl

INTRODUCTION

In Fall 2021, the Kirwan Center partnered with the Human Research Protection Program in the UMCP Division of Research to develop a Systemwide IRB protocol for ϡȱ faculty engaging in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research projects that pose minimal risk to participants. SoTL projects at their essence aim to improve student success by providing an evidence base to help inform course design and instructional decisions undertaken by faculty and programs.

With the protocol and appropriate institutional agreements in place, ϡȱ faculty can propose specific SoTL projects using a streamlined amendment form that will go to the UMCP IRB for expedited review. The Center will work closely with the ϡȱ Council for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) to identify resources (e.g., templates, training modules) that can assist CATL members in supporting faculty embarking upon SoTL research, and the Center will also explore the creation of SoTL research fellowships and a Systemwide SoTL research symposium.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

For more information, contact Nancy O’Neill, Acting Director, ϡȱ Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation, at cai@usmd.edu

ϡȱ Faculty interested in proposing a study under the umbrella protocol should consult the Systemwide IRB - Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) Resources on the UMCP Investigator Support and Resources page.

We have openly licensed the standing SoTL IRB protocol and amendment form developed for the project so that higher education systems and institutions outside of ϡȱ can adapt it for use in their local contexts. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation has been collaborating with the National Federation of the Blind for several years to support digital accessibility efforts across the System. We are excited to announce that we are now collaborating to co-host an upcoming meeting to discuss how to build support for faculty around digital accessibility for learning on Thursday, September 29 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the National Federation of Blind’s offices in Baltimore.

Digital accessibility refers to the intentional design of electronic technologies and materials so that they are usable by all people, including people with disabilities. In the case of our increasingly technology-enhanced courses, digital accessibility means equal access to educational opportunity.

The purpose of this meeting, which is co-hosted by the National Federation of the Blind and the Kirwan Center, is to explore ways ϡȱ institutions—individually and collectively—might better support faculty and other educational staff as they work to ensure that the instructional technologies and digital materials they use in their courses are accessible to all learners.

How do we help faculty understand their role in and responsibility in digital accessibility for learning? What kind of support is available to them in the selection and/or creation of instructional materials? How do we create a “born accessible” culture within our academic programs? And how might we collaborate across ϡȱ institutions to share resources and best practices?

The agenda for the day will include a keynote by Dr. Jonathan Lazar, Professor, College of Information Studies, University of ϡȱ, College Park. Dr. Lazar is involved in research and teaching related to human-computer interaction (HCI), with a focus on information and communication technology (ICT) accessibility for people with disabilities, user-centered design methods, assistive technologies, and law and public policy related to accessibility and HCI. Breakout sessions will address topics including building supports for faculty to evaluate and create curricular materials, facilitating culture change, laws/legal obligations and standards. Teams will have time to reflect on the day’s learnings and plan their next steps.

This event is by invitation only and all attendees must be part of a designated institutional team. Please use the Registration tab to register for the meeting.

Event Location:

National Federation of the Blind - 200 East Wells Street at Jernigan Place, Baltimore, ϡȱ 21230

Event Cost:

Free

Start Date:
Thursday, September 29, 2022

Event Date (expanded):

September 29, 2022 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Event Type:

Face-to-Face

Event Year:
2022

Event Program:

Schedule at a Glance

8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Registration and Breakfast

9:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.

Welcome and Opening Remarks

9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Keynote Address

Strategies for Improving Digital Accessibility: Supporting Faculty, Staff, and Administrators

Jonathan Lazar, Professor, College of Information Studies, University of ϡȱ, College Park

10:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Institutional Team Planning

10:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

Break and Transition

10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Concurrent Sessions

Building Institutional Awareness for Digital Accessibility through Campus Partnerships

ADA IRL? Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program is designed to strategically support faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at ϡȱ’s 2-year and 4-year higher education institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. The 2022 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants will provide recipients with unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation of OER in high-need areas. This year, 5 faculty grantees were selected from five 2- and 4-year ϡȱ public higher education institutions, with a potential impact on 1,000 students in AY 2022-2023

M.O.S.T. also awarded an Institutional OER Grant to Salisbury University to support strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. This grant will support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success institution-wide.

2022 Institutional OER Grant Recipient

Salisbury University

2022 Faculty OER Mini-Grant Recipients

Grantee

Institution

Course

Grant Type

Elena Klimova

Bowie State University

Introduction to Math 225 Calculus I

Adopt/Adapt OER

Patience Ebuwei

Coppin State University

Orientation to Health Science

Adopt/Adapt OER

Glenn Gebler

Prince George's Community College

BIO 2010 General Microbiology

Create, Revise, & Publish OER

Bardia Yousefi

University of ϡȱ College Park at the Universities at Shady Grove

ENBC 321 Machine Learning for Data Analysis

Create, Revise, & Publish OER

Karen Clark

University of ϡȱ School of Nursing

Healthcare Systems and Informatics

Create, Revise, & Publish OER

Areas of Focus:

Open Educational Resources

Cross Post:

News

Story

Wed, 06 Jul 2022 04:00:00 +0000 admin-annika 494 at /cai /cai/most-announces-2022-oer-grants#comments
