Students’ experiences from the spring may impact how ready they are to learn coming into this semester. It’s possible to find out about students’ readiness to learn through short, simple activities. These are typically ungraded exercises that could still count toward participation. They can be stand alone or be appended to traditional homework or quizzes. Once you know where students are starting from in terms of their knowledge, motivation, and feelings you can explore ways to adjust instruction to address the difficulties they are having.

Product management is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative jobs available today. Companies have awoken to the desperate need for product managers to create products that customers love, that integrate design, functionality, and business solutions. This is a one of kind product management certification that covers the skill sets for the entire product lifecycle.

UMCP starts this new Professional Certificate with the fundamentals of product management and why this role is so coveted as a launch pad for future CEOs and startup founders. By exploring the roles and responsibilities of being a product manager, and identify its relationship to stakeholders external and internal, including customers, engineering, legal, finance, marketing, and customer service.

As a product manager you have to own the results of your product’s success by tackling risks early and setting up your teams for success. The courses in this program move on to discussing product-market fit, with a detailed examination of target customers, customer’s underserved needs, value propositions, feature sets, and user experiences.

Finally, one cannot lead products without core skills in leadership and influence. Product managers are masters at internal sales, team building, delegation, and empowerment. They also know that great product management careers are not built alone. From envisioning a product strategy to correctly portraying the product roadmap, the process must be inclusive, interactive, and motivating. This course will enable learners to align product teams, product designs, and product development for speed and innovation at scale.

The certificate consists of five individual courses and when all five are successfully completed, the certificate will be issued (for verified learners). All courses are asynchronous which allows individual students to sign up and start the courses when they want and at their own pace. Students from all sides of the project management community will also be able to collaborate with others registered in the program.

Salisbury University’s Nursing Program Launches Alzheimer’s MOOC

SALISBURY, MD—Registration is open for Salisbury University’s newest massive open online class (MOOC), Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care.

The course, available globally through the ϡȱ��’s edX platform, was developed by Dr. Mary DiBartolo, Fulton Endowed Professor of Geriatric Nursing in SU’s School of Nursing.

Registration also is open for the second offering of DiBartolo’s Overview of Parkinson’s and Disease Management MOOC. The inaugural course drew over 1,100 students from more than 100 countries in its debut as SU’s first MOOC last fall. The new offering includes several course updates.

“Anyone can take these courses for free. They are designed for both lay people (including caregivers) and healthcare professionals,” said DiBartolo.

So far, over 700 participants from over 80 countries have enrolled in the updated version of the Parkinson’s course. The new MOOC on Alzheimer’s disease has over 1,600 participants from 114 countries.

Specializing in adult health and geriatric care with emphasis on Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, DiBartolo is certified in gerontological nursing by the American Nurses Association and in nursing education by the National League of Nursing.

For the past two decades, she has provided dementia educational programs to the Eastern Shore and surrounding region. In 2015, she completed the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Scholar Program on Parkinson’s Disease.

Registration for her MOOCs is free and the public is invited. Healthcare professionals completing either course have the option of registering for a verified certificate for $49.

The ϡȱ�� is monitoring the spread of the novel coronavirus (“SARS-CoV-2”), which has caused global outbreaks of respiratory disease (“COVID-19”). As we address this crisis, the ϡȱ�� administration and the leaders of our universities and regional centers are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

The ϡȱ�� leadership, university presidents, and key university staff have held regular coronavirus briefings to address the public health implications of COVID-19 and the impact on ϡȱ�� campuses. Our campuses have access to the guidance of infectious disease and public health experts located at various ϡȱ�� institutions, including the University of ϡȱ�� School of Medicine and the University of ϡȱ�� School of Public Health. In addition, the ϡȱ�� is working closely with federal, state, and local health officials to share information and implement policies related to preparedness and prevention.

The First MOOC from Salisbury University’s Nursing Program

SALISBURY, MD— Salisbury University’s School of Nursing is launching the campus’ first massive open online course (MOOC).

Available on the edX platform, the Overview & Management of Parkinson’s Disease course targets nurses, physical therapists, social workers and other health care professionals who care for people with Parkinson’s. It provides an overview of the disease, and explores the patient experience and special care considerations.

The five-week course begins Thursday, October 31. It is free, self-paced and open for enrollment now. The course is not for credit, but a verified certificate is available with a fee.

The content was created by Dr. Mary DiBartolo, recipient of SU’s first Fulton Endowed Professorship in Geriatric Nursing. As the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation’s Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nursing Faculty Scholar, much of her work has focused on Parkinson’s. She has presented about enhancing care for such patients at area hospitals, and also has presented at World Parkinson’s Conferences in Oregon and Japan.

Founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the edX platform offers free MOOCs to anyone who wants to learn. Since its inception, edX has grown to include 20 million learners and more than 120 university partners, including the ϡȱ��.

University of ϡȱ��, Baltimore’s Spirituality Competency MOOC

Religion and spirituality are areas of diversity and multiculturalism that have yet to be comprehensively addressed in most mental health training programs. Without this type of training, many practitioners lack the competence and confidence to engage in spiritually competent care–clinical practice that recognizes the importance of religion and spirituality in people’s identity, worldview, meaning-making and, therefore, their psychological well-being. Emerging research on treatment outcomes and client preferences, as well as professional ethical mandates, support the need for training in spiritual competencies for mental health care. To address the gap between current professional training and the needs and realities of clinical practice, the University of ϡȱ��, Baltimore has developed an online training program to assist practitioners in building their competency and comfort levels in integrating religion and spirituality into treatment.

Spiritual Competency Training in Mental Health (SCT-MH) is a seven hour asynchronous, online program consisting of eight modules. The modules are designed to develop basic competency in 16 empirically-derived spiritual competencies in mental health. The content was derived from numerous instructional materials and peer-reviewed publications, with input from leading experts in the field of spirituality and mental health. It is a multidisciplinary program, allowing mental health providers from any discipline and orientation to participate. The material is applicable for working with clients with a wide range of mental health issues from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds.

The program focuses on core spiritual competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) that underlie effective mental health care and are common to mental health disciplines and therapeutic orientations. Basic competency in spiritual and religious issues in mental health is an ethical requirement for most professional boards and associations related to mental health clinical practice.

Mental health professionals (MD, PhD, Master’s level, and trainees) of all disciplines are welcome to participate. Therapists who complete the program will be eligible for 6 CE credits.

Designing Open Educational Resources MOOC from UMUC

Today’s classrooms are dynamic, engaging and active learning spaces and our resources should be as well. Sadly, many of the available learning resources are too expensive or not dynamic or too broad to meet our instructional needs. An essential skill for educators is to be able to infuse Open Educational Resources to meet the specific needs of their learners.

This course is an introduction to learning the tools and practices for Designing Open Educational Resources (OER). The course begins with an educational system review of Open Education and how the rise in popularity of Creative Commons attribution has promoted the open sharing of instructional materials in both K-12 and higher education learning environments. Then, learners review how to identify instructional learning gaps, explore OER repositories and evaluate existing OER to identify educational and course materials to meet their needs. The course culminates with hands-on activities for remixing OER as well as designing OER in various digital media to publish educational materials to meet specific instructional needs.

No previous digital design or experience is required. All course projects and activities utilize free or shareware based online resources and applications.

This course was designed by Dr. Rand Hansen, collegiate professor and program chair at the University of ϡȱ�� University College where he leads two master’s programs; the MS in Learning Design & Technology is developing the next generation of Learning Designers to create personalized online learning experiences, and the MEd in Instructional Technology – an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Nationally Recognized Instructional Technology program. In 2015 Dr. Hansen was selected by the Center for Digital Education’s as a Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers. In 2016, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) awarded him a 2016 Making IT Happen award.

UMES Offers its’ First MOOC

UMES to offer first-of-its-kind MOOC in Hospitality/tourism course makes history on Boston-based edX platform.

On July 10, the University of ϡȱ�� Eastern Shore will become the nation's first historically black institution to launch a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Boston-based edX platform in partnership with the ϡȱ��'s Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation.

The UMES MOOC is anchored in the university's well-regarded hospitality and tourism management program. The course, “Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism Industry,” will enable learners to:

Engage in meaningful hospitality/tourism industry conversation using appropriate professional language;
Discuss the broad variety of exciting hospitality/tourism industry careers;
Locate and explore a spectrum of resources available for further study.

The course has been designed to appeal to individuals interested in career opportunities and adventures available to and experienced by hospitality/tourism industry professionals.

Leading the UMES online course is Ernest P. Boger, chair of the university's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

“I'm delighted our university is positioned to take on this groundbreaking role as the country's first historically black institution to offer a MOOC on the edX platform in … partnership with the ϡȱ�� Kirwan Center,” UMES President Heidi M. Anderson said. “This university's strong legacy in the field of hospitality and tourism is well-established, as is Dr. Boger's considerable experience and expertise.”

While students can take an edX MOOC as a non-credit course, an assessment is available only to a “verified” or certificate-pursuing learner. A host university has information regarding the course fee for a verified user. When a student earns a certificate from an edX course, it certifies completion and mastery of the content via a passing grade set by the institution. The certificate is a micro-credential that increasingly is becoming recognized by specific industries. Most employment recruiters view these certificates as advantageous for a job applicant.

Founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012, edX is an online learning destination and MOOC provider, offering high-quality courses from the world's preeminent universities and institutions to learners everywhere. With more than 130 global partners, edX counts leading universities, nonprofits, and institutions as its members.

The ϡȱ�� announced a partnership with edX in February 2017 to offer four MicroMasters® Programs, non-credit master's-level courses that can accelerate pursuit of an advanced degree and save students thousands of dollars in tuition and fees. The non-degree programs in Bioinformatics, Cloud Computing, Instructional Design and Technology, and Software Testing and Verification are being offered by the University of ϡȱ�� University College, a national online education leader and a ϡȱ��-member institution.

University of Baltimore MOOC on the Supreme Court

Beginning Sept. 30, the University of Baltimore School of Law and edX—a premier provider of massive online open courses (MOOCs)—will host "The Supreme Court and American Politics," an eight-week self-paced examination of the causes and effects of politics on the nation's top legal institution. The course, available entirely online at no cost, is hosted by Lyle Denniston, long-time Supreme Court reporter, unofficial dean emeritus of the Supreme Court press corps and UB's Wilson H. Elkins Professor of Academic Transformation in the University's Bank of America Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Technology.

Denniston will be joined by a number of distinguished legal scholars from the University of Baltimore in this close look at the Court, which Denniston describes as having a mission, from its founding in 1789, that was "not so dependent upon popularity with the people." In the decades since, political influence on the Supreme Court has waxed and waned, often depending on the immediacy of the issue at hand. In Bush v. Gore, for example, the Court intervened in a controversial vote count, effectively deciding the election of a president. In other cases, the impact of a decision may take years to comprehend.

Each week, learners will be will presented with videos—both lectures and discussions with one of several guests. These guests will include:

Gilda Daniels, University of Baltimore School of Law professor and director of litigation for The Advancement Project. Prof. Daniels is a former deputy chief for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Garrett Epps, University of Baltimore School of Law professor and Supreme Court correspondent for The Atlantic.
Ron Weich, dean of the University of Baltimore Law School and a former U.S. Assistant Attorney General and Senate Counsel to Senators Harry Reid and Edward Kennedy.

These weekly video lectures and discussions will be supplemented by reading materials and discussions that will help you understand why a national court is, in reality, very different from the politically-chosen national policy branches of government—the legislative and executive branches. Despite this distinction, the Supreme Court of the United States must still be a constitutional partner to these elected bodies.

This online course is ideal for anyone with more than a passing interest in the Court. EdX is a leading provider of MOOCs, and includes Harvard University, Caltech, Imperial College London and dozens of other leading colleges and universities among its partners.
